Available Government Benefits

Government-funded benefits available to special needs individuals have significant and complex rules. To protect ongoing benefits it is important that any financial activity is in compliance with these agencies. The application processes for these services also are complex and can be time consuming. Eligibility policies should be closely reviewed prior to application and upon approval. Annual reviews of each must be completed, as there often are amendments and modifications made to policies affecting eligibility. Proper estate planning is also crucial to ensure these benefits are protected.

  • Social Security — The U.S. Social Security Administration provides retirement, survivor, and/or disability income benefits.
  • Arizona Department of Economic Security — DES provides food stamps and financial needs-based health insurance benefits through the Arizona Health Cost Care Containment System (AHCCCS) which is Arizona’s Medicaid system.
  • Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities — This is a division of DES that provides services for those who have a permanent developmental disability occurring before age 18. For example, Autism, Cognitive/Intellectual disability, Epilepsy, Down’s Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy).
  • Arizona Long Term Care System — ALTCS is a division of AHCCCS (Medicaid) providing long-term care services to the elderly and/or those with permanent disabilities requiring a significant level of assistance with activities of daily living.
